7th ODI: India v England at Indore, 15 April 2006
Robin Uthappa winner all the Way
The excitement and thrill of watching the debutant Robin Uthappa play is sheer magic. Uthappa is a promising young opener from Karnataka and was always on the border for national selection. His desire for strokes made him a candidate for the opener’s slot one-day internationals, mainly after an absorbing century at the Challenger Trophy last year.
Challenged with a target of 289, Uthappa showed his authority with two confident boundaries in the first over. Balancing his way through the match, he played with sense and patience all the way. Balls directed to the pads were dispatched and flicked away with minimum of fuss. His impelled strokes off Sajid Mahmood and Paul Collingwood were excellently delivered never for one moment giving the impression of a debutant player. With his captain Rahul Dravid speeding ahead, Uthappa made sure he wasn’t too far behind, catching up with Dravid by batting Anderson's fifth over for 15 runs. The opening stand of 166 was just what India needed to chase such a tall target. Uthappa.s innings ended in a run-out.
By the end of the match, there was no doubt that for a debutant he played excellently with a score of 86 in a one-day match. His innings were not all bizarre or uneven. His innings was the highest by an Indian batsman on debut in a one-day international. |
