Sri Lanka Team World Cup History
Sri Lanka left its fingerprints on the coveted World Cup when it lifted it in 1996. The present team has few players who were a part of the team in that historic triumph. The younger players' hunger for similar glory has been abetted by the stories of the victory in 1996 World Cup.

The following is a countdown of Sri Lanka's participation in the World Cups starting from 1975.

1975 World Cup

Sri Lanka made its first participation in a World Cup in 1975, this was before a test status had been accorded to it. Sri Lanka made an early exit in he first round.

1979 World Cup

Sri Lanka was no match against the extremely experienced teams that it was pitted against in the 1979 World Cup. It was forced to keep its 1979 World Cup tour to the first round.

1983 World Cup

1983 World Cup did not bring about any change in the fortunes of Sri Lanka. It waved bye to the cup before reaching the second round.

1987 World Cup

Sri Lanka finished last in its Group, with no wins from six matches. Thus like all the other previous World Cups, Sri Lanka made a hasty farewell to the tournament in the first round itself.

1991 World Cup

1991 World Cup was marked by many firsts- day and night matches were introduced, white balls and colored uniforms sprinkled the green turf, this was first world cup to be played in any African country and so on. But the 1991 World Cup did not bring about any reversal in Sri Lanka's luck in the World Cup. It finished eighth in the world cup.

1996 World Cup

Sri Lanka made up for all the humiliation of spree of first round defeats in 1996 World Cup. The practice of sending pinch-hitters had already been introduced in the previous World Cup. Sri Lanka experimented by sending as openers. The move paid off and Sri Lanka got one brilliant start after another. The team's middle order never looked formidable enough and Sri Lanka won the tournament with losing a single match. The final was set against Australia at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. Aravinda De Silva scored a brilliant century in the final- becoming only the third batsman to do so in the final.

1999 World Cup

Sri Lanka lapsed into nostalgia of its World Cup performances before the 1999 World Cup triumph. It finished 5th in Group A table, a notch higher than Kenya. It could not progress beyond the first round.

2003 World Cup

Sri Lanka showed early signs of repeating its 1996 World Cup performance in this world cup. The first round saw it leading the Pool B table. It reached the semi-final against a strong Australian team. The match turned out to be a low scoring one and was marred by rain. Australia was declared the winner after imposition of Duckworth-Lewis method. gives information on Sri Lanka Team World Cup History and other Team Profiles
