The England Team's World Cup History is not very encouraging as the country has never won the World Cup. However the fact that it has managed to reach the finals thrice is an assertion of the fact that England have always been a very strong contender in the competitions.
- In the 1975 World Cup held in England itself, the hosts did reasonably well to reach the semifinals where they were defeated by arch rivals Australia.
- The 1979 World Cup, also held in England, saw England better it's past performance by reaching the finals of the tournament. However they finished runners up after they were defeated by the West Indies in the finals.
- Hosts for the third consecutive time, England once again failed to emerge as world champions in the 1983 World Cup. They were a semifinalist, but were stopped by the eventual champions India in the semis.
- In the 1987 World Cup, England probably came the closest to winning the coveted trophy. They performed very well to reach the finals, but in a real see-saw of a match which could have gone either way, England lost by just 7 runs to Australia.
- The 1992 World Cup once again was a frustration for England as they finished runners up for the third time. They lost to Pakistan in the final by 22 runs.
- England put up a very poor show in the 1996 World Cup and failed to get past the quarter finals. They lost to Sri Lanka in the quarter finals.
- As hosts, England were expected to put up a fight in the 1999 World Cup. However, none of that happened and England once again disappointed with a first round exit.
- The 2003 World Cup was another disappointment for England. They once again failed to get past the first round.
With 2007 World Cup coming up, England would hope to better their record at the tournament, and with some bright new players making their mark in the recent past, a lot can be expected from England.
