Bangladesh played in the World Cup for the first time in 1999. In the years between 1979-1996 they could not qualify for the tournament and before that in 1975 they were not eligible or the contest as the country was not an ICC member. They won the ICC trophy in 1997 and thereby qualified for the 1999 World Cup. They have participated in the 2003 World Cup as well, giving them two exposures of the tournament.
- 1999- Bangladesh fared rather poorly in their maiden World Cup appearance and could not make it past the first round. However they achieved a major feat by defeating Pakistan, the series runners-up, in a league match. This victory was monumental as it helped Bangladesh acquire Test status. They won a total of two matches, the other being the match against Scotland.
- 2003- Bangladesh's second outing in the World Cup was no better than the first. In the 2003 World Cup, Bangladesh once again failed to get past the first round. They finished at the bottom of their group and lost all the matches they played, including the match against debutants Canada.
Bangladesh do not have too many happy memories of the World Cup. However they would like to put it all in the past and go into World Cup 2007 with a positive outlook and hope to perform well.
