He made his Test debut against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 1992 when he became the 350th player to wear the baggy green cap. He is one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the 20th Century, along with Sir Donald Bradman, Jack Hobbs of England and Garry Sobers and Sir Vivian Richards, both of the West Indies.
Finished the 2005 Travelex Tour of England as Australia's player of the series, and extended his position as the world's greatest wicket taker, his 40 wickets on tour taking him up to 623 career wickets.
Incurred a 12-month suspension from all cricket in February 2003 following a random drug test that revealed a prohibited substance in his system.
Missed six matches in the 2002/03 VB Series and the fourth and fifth Orange Test matches against England after dislocating his right shoulder diving for the ball during the VB Series match against England in Melbourne on 15 December. Returned for the first final in Sydney on 23 January.
