Alan McGilvray, as a commentator, brought before the people glued to their radio sets to listen to his commentary, a vicarious pleasure of watching a cricket match live. Alan McGilvray's commentary brought alive the moving bodies on the cricket outfield in the minds of his listeners.

Alan McGilvray remained a commentator for over 50 years. The occasion of his retirement drew no less than the Prime Minister himself to make the farewell speech; the large crowd that had gathered for the event bade farewell to Alan McGilvray with a standing ovation.
